Southern Cross

The Southern Cross, or Crux, is one of the most beloved and recognizable constellations in the southern hemisphere. You may recognize it from our national flag, where it proudly represents New Zealand’s unique place in the world. The Southern Cross contains several bright stars, including Acrux, which is the brightest in the constellation. It’s visible from most parts of Aotearoa and has been used as a navigational aid for centuries due to its proximity to the South Celestial Pole.

Jewel Box Cluster NGC 4755

The Jewel Box Cluster, also known as NGC 4755 or the Jewel Box Cluster, is a bright open cluster of stars located in the southern constellation of Crux (the Southern Cross). The cluster contains around 100 stars and is estimated to be around 6.4 million years old. The stars in the cluster are very young and are still in the process of forming, which makes it an excellent object for studying stellar evolution. The Jewel Box Cluster is known for its striking appearance, with a bright orange-red star contrasting with the surrounding blue stars.
